Project 3: Zine

“Sidewalk Portal” – Zine Project – Elif

‘Sidewalk Portal’ is basically my way of sharing what catches my eye during my walks. You know those green-covered sidewalk sheds? Well, I’ve been peeking through the openings, capturing the beginnings of construction or those moments of empty space.

I jotted down the addresses on tracing paper to make it a bit interactive. So, as you flip through, you’re not just looking at pictures, you’re kinda strolling through the city with me.

Learning p5.riso!

It was fun learning about p5.riso. It makes it easier to cut out colors and text elements because otherwise I had to do it manually in illustrator or photoshop. It’s been a while since I used p5.js so at first it was a bit challenging.

I started experimenting with grids and tried to tilt etc. I couldn’t find my code to the gradient example for some reason, I think I overwrite another code on it. So, I  moved on with the circle/square grid example. The feedback I got in class was that it didn’t have a randomness of an element of surprise. I added randomness in terms of opacity and  x-y coordinates.

Here’s the code I used for this project: https://editor.p5js.org/zelifergin/sketches/gYuTkxPkq

Project 1: Riso Animation -Elif

First Riso Animation!!!

I had fun during the printing process and realized that I needed to print multiple times to get the best output. Now, my first prints are a bit smudgy because the colors were not vertically aligned. And I had issues with the red drum. I increased the density of the color but it didn’t make any difference. Below is the original video I took during the summer and the riso version.

Another main issue was my prints were larger than 10.5, 16.5 inches and not straight. After I set up the guide, some frames were bigger and some were smaller – which makes my animation not consistent. (you can see above.)

I added adjustment layers and played with the opacity to get rid of the empty white areas but it didn’t solve the problem.

Next time, I’ll definitely print more sheets and make sure that the squares align-well! – Elif
