NYU Study: Hate Speech on Twitter and Hate Crimes
A study performed by NYU researchers found that cities with more racist tweets reported more real-life crimes related to race, ethnicity, and national origin. The researchers used machine learning to analyze 532 million tweets posted in 100 cities between 2011 and 2016.
The Names and Science Behind the Turing Award
On June 15, 2019, NYU researcher Yann LeCun and two colleagues were presented with the 2018 Turing Award for their work in artificial intelligence. The award’s namesake, Alan Turing, was a computing pioneer and is considered by many to be an icon of the LGBTQ movement.
3D Printing Materials for Submersible Vehicles
Syntactic foam is a substance that lends submersible vehicles both strength and buoyancy. Nikhil Gupta, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, has developed a filament that will enable the foam to be printed on standard commercial 3D printers.
NYU Professor Yann LeCun One of Three Recipients of 2018 Turing Award
Congratulations to NYU professor and Tech Summit keynote speaker Yann LeCun, one of three researchers to receive the 2018 Turing Award. LeCun, Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, were honored with the $1 million “Nobel Prize of computing” in recognition of their work in AI deep learning.
OpenStack Brooklyn Research Cluster in the NYU Tandon News
NYU HPC’s OpenStack Brooklyn Research Cluster is “being used…in such areas as machine learning, web crawling, data analytics, and in complex applications like genomics browsers and sign-language translation.”
Updates on NYU Digital Library Technology Services Research and Grants
The NYU Library and Digital Library Technology Services have received a number of grants from charitable organizations which further the mission of cataloging, digitizing, and making available a wealth of information, including recent projects around academic “Git” services and university press monographs.
Wax to Metal
The world of 3D printing has expanded beyond the confines of plastics and includes various new 3D printing materials, with many more on the horizon. In some cases, the modern 3D printing process combines with age-old techniques to produce something amazing. Through a time-consuming and fascinating process, it is possible to “print” metal objects.
Arabic Collections Online Posts 10,000th Book
Digital Library Technology Services (DLTS) is proud to report that it has added the 10,000th book to the Arabic Collections Online (ACO), an open-access library of Arabic language books. ACO makes use of a number of NYU IT resources to provision and maintain the infrastructure for the repository.
SONYC Project to Research Noise Pollution
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) featured the SONYC project in their February, 2019 newsletter. SONYC’s goal is to leverage “the latest in machine learning technology, big data analysis, and citizen science reporting to more effectively monitor, analyze, and mitigate urban noise pollution.”
