Open letter to bees (from someone with an irrational fear)

Dear bees,

We’ve had a complicated relationship. For years I thought you were on the same level as It the clown and Freddy Krueger. I know those characters are imaginary and you are very real but you managed to scare me just the same.

It’s an irrational fear or at the very least annoyance people seem to have with bees. If they get in your face you either swat them or in my case run away. It wasn’t until recent, very recent, that I begrudgingly accepted you as necessary and productive members of society. Read more

MLK Day officially falls on Monday, January 16 but there are volunteer opportunities all weekend long. Carbon Offsetting my Winter Break

carbon footprintOur carbon footprint is a measurement of the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere from the activities we perform in our day-to-day lives, such as driving, turning on the lights, or flying in a plane. Our carbon footprints can be offset through activities that minimize or divert carbon dioxide.

During winter break, between flying back to my home state of California, purchasing gifts and decorations for the holiday, and cooking elaborate meals with my family, I know my carbon footprint with likely increase significantly. A challenge for teams of students to design infrastructure projects to manage stormwater runoff, providing benefits to their campus and the environment.

Celebrating International Compost Awareness Week: The Facts

poster-contest-winner-YessiHappy ICAW to all! This week (May 1-7) is International Compost Awareness Week. The week-long educational event is hosted by the US Composting Council, who since 1999 have promoted biodegradable waste approaches through ICAW events and initiatives. This year’s theme is Compost: The Soil and Water Connection. The theme brings composting back to its roots (pardon the pun) by reminding us that despite amazing new technologies, composting is inevitably about taking some of the most fundamental, natural processes out there and putting them to use in our waste systems once again.
