“Give goods, find goods, and do good.” Reflections on the NYCxREUSE Conference and Expo

On June 21st, I attended the first ever NYCxREUSE conference and expo hosted by donateNYC. donateNYC is a program run by the Department of Sanitation whose slogan is “give goods, find goods, and do good,” and this was the theme of the conference’s panel discussions. The conference brought together leaders in the public, non-profit, and private sectors to discuss strategies in landfill diversion, as well as the social impact and economic opportunities created by partnerships designed to redistribute resources.

This year, over 800 NYU students living on campus completed the Green Room Pledge organized by the NYU EcoReps. Below are the actions they pledged to or already take to live more sustainably in on-campus housing. Even those who don’t live in an NYU residence hall can lower their carbon footprint and live more sustainably through these actions.

Building Resiliency: A Recap of Urban Green Council’s Weathering the Storm Conference

After Superstorm Sandy, when most of lower Manhattan was dark, NYU stayed warm and lighted from its cogeneration plant. We learned then the value of building resilience. Combining sustainability with resiliency brings in many more benefits. Insulating and air sealing buildings keeps them warm longer if a power outage occurs in freezing weather. Energy efficient lighting and appliances extend the runtime of generators’ fuel tanks. And reducing our carbon footprint helps mitigate global climate change that makes natural disasters more common to begin with.
