Letter-Perfect Handwriting Instruction

_________________________________________________________________________

This competence project was the germination of the Frame of Reference for Children Learning Sequential Strokes for Printing Letters as a way of bridging research and theory into practice. Letter-Perfect Handwriting Instruction (L-Phi) is a methodologically driven instructional handwriting initiative for beginning writers. It uniquely applies graphic behavior, or analytic strategies for copying simple geometric patterns, to establish the formation of each letter. Additionally, graphic behavior is coupled with motor learning theory to systematically organize the progression of letter instruction to optimize skill acquisition.

Illustrations, pictures, title and sample letters for the Letter-Perfect Handwriting Workbook were drawn by the author using Procreate and Adobe software.

The Letter-Perfect Handwriting Instruction workbook was developed for use by occupational therapy practitioners, teachers, and parents. It is meant to be simple to use without having previous knowledge about handwriting instruction, theories, or research. The workbook itself should be viewed as the tip of the iceberg, the compendium below was produced to explain all the details involved (e.g., objectives, theories, and research) that lie beneath the surface. The compendium was developed using the rubric provided in New York University’s Doctoral Handbook.
