The Write Way
_________________________________________________________________________
The Write Way infographic was developed for use by occupational therapy practitioners, educators, and parents. The purpose of the infographic is to distill published research on handwriting instruction practices into an easy-to-use guide. The Write Way infographic provides recommendations for common questions such as:
- Is it necessary for beginning writers to use short or wide pencils?
- Should beginning writers use special paper?
- Does grasp pattern matter?
- Do supplemental pencil grips improve handwriting?
- Should children be encouraged to learn to write on vertical or slanted surfaces?
The Write Way infographic is intended to be printed as a double-sided laminated insert for the Letter-Perfect Handwriting Instruction workbook (see Competence Project). The Write Way infographic can also be posted on a web page, printed as a poster, or modified for a poster presentation (see below for variations).

Front
The front side of the infographic is divided into five sections. Each section contains easy-to-use practical guidance that is highlighted and circled. Guidance is based on scientific research and motor learning theory.
Note: The version below is oriented slightly to the right (front) or left (back) of the page to allow space for hole-punches.

Back
The back side illustrates four common functional grasp patterns.
Note: This version of The Write Way illustrates right-hand grasp patterns. Left-handed writers often use an inverted writing posture with a slightly flexed wrist. Future editions of The Write Way will include illustrations of left-handed grasp patterns which include the wrist.
Illustrations and pictures for The Write Way infographics were drawn by the author using Procreate software.
