Handwriting, Keyboarding, or Both: Using the Right Tool for the Right Task
___________________________________________________________________
With the growing presence of computers in today’s classrooms and homes, keyboarding has become a realistic option when handwriting dysfunction persists. Nevertheless, there remain many questions that surface when considering when to utilize keyboarding as an alternative for handwriting. The purpose of the following presentation was to:
1. Examine the impact of handwriting acquisition and handwriting dysfunction
2. Highlight the benefits of keyboarding
3. Review some of the factors occupational therapy practitioners should consider when introducing keyboarding for students with handwriting difficulties
Note: The following poster presentation was developed for the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association’s 2022 Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio held in September. Conference specifications required that all posters be presented in video format lasting under ten minutes.
Note: This presentation specifically examines handwriting and keyboarding as currently viable transcription methods. As new technologies are developed and become more commonly available in homes and classrooms, they will need to be included in the discussion.
