Part I (2X75 min.)
Step 1. Warm-up: In pairs, students discuss the following questions to brainstorm about what they think and can express about the topic.
- वैलेंटाइन डे कब और क्यों मनाया जाता है?
- वैलेंटाइन वीक क्या है?
- अगर आप वैलेंटाइन डे मनाएंगे तो आप क्या करेंगे?
- वैलेंटाइन डे के सिम्बल्स क्या क्या हैं?
Step 2. In pairs, students read the following text excerpts assigned to them (section 1 is appropriate for lower proficiency and section 2 – for higher proficiency). They use the vocabulary sheet as reference if needed.
Section 1:
किसी ने ठीक ही कहा है, “प्यार के लिए, प्यार करने से बेहतर दवा कोई नहीं है.”पूरे वैलेंटाइन वीक में प्यार करने वालों के लिए अगर कुछ मायने रखता है, तो वह है एक दूसरे का साथ और प्यार. 14 फरवरी का दिन प्यार करने वालों के लिए बहुत ही खास है. क्यों? अभी पता चल जाएगा. अगर आप सोच रहे हैं कि वैलेंटाइन डे कब है, तो आपको बता दें कि वैलेंटाइन वीक रोज डे से शुरू होता है और वैलेंटाइन डे के साथ खत्म होता है वैलेंटाइन डे 14 फरवरी को होता है… लेकिन इससे पहले पूरे हफ्ते इसके आने के लिए प्यार का जश्न मनाया जाता है. इस वैलेंटाइन वीक में पूरे सात दिन प्यार के नाम होते हैं, इन्हें वैलेंटाइन लव डेज भी कहते हैं. इन सातों दिन प्यार करने वाले अलग-अलग तरीकों और चीज़ों से अपने प्यार का इज़हार करते है. वैलेंटाइन वीक में अलग-अलग तरह के कार्यक्रम किए जाते हैं.
7 फरवरी से शुरू होने वाले वैलेंटाइन वीक का पहला दिन जोकि रोज़ डे है. दूसरा दिन यानी 8 फरवरी को प्रपोज़ डे, 9 फरवरी को चॉकलेट डे, 10 फरवरी को टेडी डे, 11 फरवरी को प्रॉमिस डे, 12 फरवरी को हग डे, 13 फरवरी को किस डे और 14 फरवरी को वैलेंटाइन्स डे होगा.
Section 2:
प्रेमी युगल अपने इस खास दिन को मनाने के लिए अनोखे तरीके अपनाते हैं. इस मौके पर दोस्त एक दूसरे को वैलेंटाइन डे मैसेज, लव मैसेज और रोमांटिक वैलेंटाइन डे कोट्स और सेईंग शेयर करते हैं. कुछ लोग अपने वैलेंटाइन को ग्रीटिंग कार्ड देना भी पसंद करते हैं. तो अगर आप भी सोच रहे हैं कि वैलेंटाइन ग्रीटिंग में क्या लिखें. तो हम आपको सलाह देंगे कि आप ऐसे वैलेंटाइन गिफ्ट या कार्ड खरीदें जो उनकी पसंद के अनुरूप हो.
क्या है वैलेंटाइन डे का इतिहास और कौन थे वैलेंटाइन?
इतिहासकार बताते हैं कि वेलेंटाइन डे की शुरुआत रोम में तीसरी शताब्दी के दौरान हुई थी. लोकप्रिय कहानी के अनुसार, सम्राट क्लॉडियस-II ने युवा पुरुषों के लिए विवाह को अवैध ठहराया था, क्योंकि उनका मानना था कि एकल पुरुषों ने बेहतर सैनिक बनाए. हालाँकि, उनके विचारों का खंडन करने के लिए, वेलेंटाइन नामक एक युवा पुजारी ने चुपके से युवा प्रेमियों के लिए विवाह करना जारी रखा. सम्राट क्लॉडियस को जब यह पता चला तो उसने वेलेंटाइन को मौत सुनाई. इस दौरान जेल में बंद होने पर उन्हें जेलर की बेटी से प्यार हो गया. इससे पहले कि उन्हें मौत के घाट उतार दिया जाता, वैलेंटाइन ने अपनी प्रिय को अपना अंतिम प्रेम पत्र दिया और लिखा “फ्रॉम योर वैलेंटाइन”. इसे आज भी लिखा जाता है. बाद में, वैलेंटाइन को सम्मानित करने के लिए 14 फरवरी को वैलेंटाइन डे रूप में मनाया जाने लगा.
Step 3. Students (individually) scan their text and, when they find the words from the sheet in the text, they circle them.

Step 4. In pairs, students write the definition or explanation of 10 words/phrases of their choice.
Step 5. Students change their partner and summarize their section of the reading to their partner who has only read the other section. (The student who read section 1 summarizes it to a partner who read section 2 and vice versa)
Step 6. (If time allows) In two groups, students play Guessing Game (one group reads their word/phrase definition out-loud and the other group guesses the vocabulary item)
Homework: Students write a summary of the reading part they have heard about from their partners.
Part II (2X75 min.)
Step 1. The teacher explains passive voice with examples and asks the students to scan both sections of the text for instances of passive voice use.
Step 2. Students (individually) make five sentences using the words from the vocabulary sheet and verbs in the passive voice in the context of Valentine’s Day. They share their sentences with a partner and give each other feedback.
Step 3. In pairs, students, formulate at least five questions to ask their classmates about Valentine’s Day (based on student-generated question sheet).
Step 4. Students change partners; they ask and answer each others’ questions.
Step 5. In pairs, students write one complex sentence using as many words as possible from the vocabulary sheet. They receive points for correctly using (a) the language structure, (b) words. The student pair with most points is the winner.
Homework: Students (individually) write 10-15 sentences about Valentine’s Day. They use the language structure at least 3 times and at least 10 of the new vocabulary.
