This lesson was developed in Hindi (see below) and Urdu (click here) by the teacher-participants at STARTALK@ NYU, 2016, during a session led by Prof. Seema Khurana (Yale University):
Target Proficiency Level: Novice High/Intermediate Low (55-60 mins)
Objectives: By the end of the session the students will be able to:
- tell time
- ask and answer questions about train time schedule
- plan the itinerary for a trip and explain why
- describe place/s of their choice
Language Targets:
- compulsion/obligation construction — Xको + infinitive +होना (मुझे। .. जाना है, वापस आना है)
- time expressions — X +को + समय/वक्त + लगना (आप को वहां पहुंचने में १० घंटे लगेंगे )
- telling time (सवा तीन बजे, 5 बजने में 12 मिनट, 7 बजकर 10 मिनट + पर )
- infinitive + चाहना (…जाना चाहते हैं )
Standards: Communication (3 modes), Culture, Comparison (time schedule in India emphasize last and first train), Connection (a touch of math, geography)
Performance Tasks:
- Interpretive: Listen to the train station announcements and check off the timings you here in a train schedule table.
- Presentational: Look at the time on your phone. Find your location on the map and choose where you will go to meet a friend on the GPS — look at how long it will take you and tell your friend what time s/he needs to be there and how (कितने बजे जाना है, कैसे जाना है, कहां तक जाना है) .
- Interpersonal: Student A. Customer: Decide where you want to go and what times work for you from the time schedule, check availability and buy a ticket. B. Ticket Agent: Decide what times are sold out and sell a ticket to your customer for one of the time slots s/he requests.
- Interpersonal: Student A has some information from the day schedule and student B has other pieces of the schedule (http://hindi.erail.in/): You and your partner have different pieces of the schedule for the day. Ask questions until you complete the whole schedule of the day.
- Interpersonal: In pairs negotiate with your friend and come to consensus about the trip plan (given a money and time limit) — what you want to do and what you need to do . Fill out the graphic organizer or the table (4 columns including time, food, activities, packing)
- Presentational: Ask your parents to give you money and explain the details of your plans and what you want to do (मुझे। .. जाना है, … पैसा लगता है, वापस आना है, मैट्रो। … बजे जाती है, जाना चाहते हैं)
- Presentational: Students choose to create: (a) at least 5 FB posts about their trip and write captions for each photo using the compulsion construction (जरूर जाना है ,घूमना है, देखना है, लाना है, खरीदना है, खाना है, ) or (b) Facetime a friend to tell them what they need to do – 5 places to go to and/or 5 activities about their trip and send a short email about it.
- Presentational and Interpersonal: Change partners and present your plans to two more friends, convince them to join you because there is a group discount. Make the needed changes in the plan to accommodate their preferences and schedules.
