Lesson III. (4X75min.) Come visit or live in my city/village.घूमने या बसने मेरे शहर/गाँव आये

A. Proficiency Level: Intermediate Mid/High

B. Objectives: At the end of this lesson students will be able to:

  • make comparisons between neighborhoods and styles of life
  • explain season-based traditions and activities specific to a region
  • create interest towards specific places or activities
  • formulate extended polite requests in the subjunctive:जूते उतारें, पूछ लीजियेगा

C. Performance Assessment: First, students are a part of an online real estate agency. They will explore authentic materials and create their own promotional online video (with an accompanying pdf) for visitors and for potential property buyers as a part of their website as well as an online video ad.

Their product includes:

  • information about the place of their choice
  • at least 3 landmarks in or around and their history
  • 3  interesting/distinctive facts about the style of life in that place
  • 2-3 season-based activities
  • specific festival or tradition and other attractions.

Next, they take turns playing (a) the role of a customer who is looking for property to rent on a monthly basis or to buy and (b) a real estate agent who is advertising the city by presenting the online ad first.

D. Learning Scenarios: Teacher provides a sample of tourist information — parts of the text-based overview of Jaipur and video-based overview from Incredible India campaign (teacher plays without volume the panoramic scenes and with volume when local speakers are on camera).

1. In small groups or pairs students are assigned to watch and take notes about 5 useful expressions and 5 interesting facts from one of the following videos: India Real Estate Beginners Guide, India Real Estate Guide-Pune, Real Estate Ad

2. Student change partners (jigsaw) and share notes. Then they choose a place they want to know about and explore more.

Students explore links, take notes and build their project. Suggested sites:

3. Each student develops a list of 5 pros or cons why they promote or visit one place over another they argue with their partner. They keep track of the points which were not refuted and incorporate them in the project.

4. Each student prepares individually or in pairs several inquiries s/he has as a customer.

5. Students role-play as agent and customer.

6. For homework they send an email (FLLs) or leave a phone message (FLLs) as a customer to their agent explaining why they decided to rent/buy or NOT to rent/buy in the advertised place.
