It is common to use the modal verb सकना in the present habitual tense to indicate a possible action or activity in future.
Subject (direct) + Object + Verb[stem] + सक+ता/-ते /-ती Aux Verb [Present: हूँ / है/ हो/ हैं]
For example:
मेरा परिवार अगले साल भारत जा सकता है। He can go to India.[ सकना in Present Habitual Tense]
The modal verb सकना is also used the future tense indication “to be able to… .”
Subject + (object) + सक [stem] -ऊँगा/ऊँगी, -एँगे/एँगी, -एगा/एगी, -अोगे/अोगी [Future Tense]
For example: मेरा परिवार भारत जा सकेगा। My family will be able to go to India.
Please note:
- Unlike English, the modal verb सकना is never use without a main verb:
वह भारत जा सकता है। He can go to India but never वह भारत सकता है। (a wrong sentence)
- The modal verb सकना is never used in the present or past progressive construction.
मैं हिन्दी लिख सक रहा हूँ। (a wrong sentence)
