Target Language Structures: Students will be able to:

  • use personal pronouns, postpositions expressing possessions and possessive pronouns
  • Ask questions using kaun, kitnii/kitnaa/kitne, kyaa
  • Use comparatives and superlatives

Objectives: The students will be able to:

  • identify the basic kinship terms
  • Describe the family
  • Ask and answer questions about each other’s family

Performance Assessment: Two students are roommates and they share the pictures of family to get to know each other better. They describe the pictures using the names,  and whether they are younger or older or oldest or youngest.

Learning Scenarios:

  1. Teacher starts by showing the students a picture of her or his family and introduces them to the key kinship terms, maataa/pitaa, bhaaii/bahan, naanaa/naanii, daadaa/daadii
  2. Teacher shows a powerpoint presentation on celebrity(Amitabh Bacchan’s) family, अमिताभ का परिवार and students describe celebrity families using possessives: kaa/ke/kii. 
  3. Students take out pictures of their favorite celebrity and describe celebrity family to each other using iskaa–inkaa, iske–inke, iskii–inkii
  4. Students review it again using adjectives, superlatives and comparatives to describe the family such as X-se  baRii hai, choTii hai, sabse baRii hai, sabse choTii hai. 

Learning Episodes: 

  1. Put the family members in order from oldest family member to the youngest family member.
  2. From smallest to tallest?

Differentiation: Group the family members by relationship to their mothers or fathers. Compare all the family members in the group.

  • Who has the most siblings?
  • Who has the least?
  • How many aunts and uncles are there?
  • How many grandparents?
  • Develop graphs or charts to document the information which you are gathering. 

Students play the game of four corners on zoom. In pairs student’s are assigned to four different breakout rooms. Each breakout room is given a set of questions on family and students answer them and then room 1 students move to the 2nd room and 2nd room students move to 3rd room and 3rd room students move to 4th room till they answer all the questions. In each room they record the conversation with mote. 

  • Kya aapkii bahan hai?
  • choTii hai ya baDii hai?
  • Usko kyaa pasand hai?
  • Aap ke parivaar mein kaun kaun hain?
  • Kya aap ka bhai hai?
  • Aapke Pitaaji kaa naam kya hai?

During class, students listen to other recordings and after reviewing each other’s answers, students make a chart of the whole class family.

In breakout rooms, in pairs students use their family picture to describe the members of their family to each other. As a whole class students describe each other’s family members.

Presentation Task: Students make a family tree with the names of the person, relation to the person, whether the person is older or younger. 

Riddle: जब मैं चार साल का था तब मेरी बहन मेरे से आधी उम्र की थी। अब मैं 100 साल का  हूँ। मेरी बहन कितने साल की है?
