Objectives: Students will be able to:

  • understand and state in simple sentences what people do for Diwali
  • ask and answer simple questions about Diwali 

Language Targets: Students will be able to use:

  • present habitual tense (मनाते हैं, बनाते हैं) 
  • adjective-noun agreement (रंग-बिरंगे फूल, नये कपड़े )
  • what (क्या), what kind (कैसे) and when (कब)

Learning Episodes:

1. In groups, students brainstorm and work on a graph organizer (3 column table) based on what they know in the context of Diwali. Teacher walks around and fills out the table on the board at the same time, using two colors – old vocabulary  and new vocabulary. Teacher elicits and/or introduces with drawings and acting out words that students might know or will need.

2. Teacher shows a few pictures and introduces सुबह (6am-12pm), दोपहर के समय (12pm), दोपहर के बाद (12pm-6pm), शाम को (6pm-12am), रात में (12-6am) and लोग क्या करते हैं? 

3. In pairs students orally form simple sentences in the present tense based on the images.

4. Students use their phones, choose 3 images and write captions in 2-3 sentences, describing the images. They have to use present simple tense: लोग क्या करते हैं? लोग क्या खरीदते हैं 

Homework 1: They have to complete the description of the two images and choose one more to describe.

5. In groups of 3 they work on FB post: students show each others’ images and choose a new one to describe in 5 or more sentences (captions) using ones from their homeworks.

6. Teacher introduces questions: लोग क्या करते हैं? लोग क्या खरीदते हैं ? लोग कब …? घर कैसा है? लोग कैसे हैं? मालाएं कैसी हैं?  (teacher raises awareness about gender agreement between question word and noun, as well as in the answer between adjective and noun)  students form a few questions based on the 5 sentences they wrote.

7. In the same groups students scan a paragraph from an authentic website and circle the words they can recognize.

दिवाली, एक धार्मिक, विविध रंगों के प्रयोग से रंगोली सजाने, प्रकाश औऱ खुशी का, अंधकार हटाने का, मिठाईयों का, पूजा आदि का त्यौहार है. पूरे भारत के साथ साथ देश के बाहर भी कई स्थानों पर लोग दिवाली मनाते हैं. यह रोशनी या प्रकाश का त्यौहार है. यह सम्पूर्ण विश्व में हिन्दूओं, सिखों और जैनियों  का त्यौहार है. उस दिन बहुत से देशों जैसे तोबागो, सिंगापुर, सुरीनम, नेपाल, मारीशस, गुयाना,त्रिनिदाद  और श्री लंका, म्यांमार, मलेशिया और फिजी में राष्ट्रीय अवकाश होता है।

The teacher assigns the fast readers to go back to their graphic organizer and put a checkmark on the words they recognized in the text.

Homework 2. In pairs each student uses an image, writes up 5 questions and uploads them on a Google Classroom or another platform and an assigned partner answers the questions orally in an audio file. Students can also use email and just email their questions along with the image to their partner and cc their instructor.
