B. Objectives: Students will be able to:

  • understand and make offers and requests in a restaurant
  • politely accept and reject suggestions
  • express what they like and why

Language:

  • use of polite commands with the imperative forms
  • use of subjunctive to express polite command, hesitation, wish
  • use of subjunctive in conditional sentences

C. Performance task: Students role-play a situation at the restaurant — 2 customers and 1 waiter/waitress (handout 4)

Learning Scenarios:

1. Students read/listen to the sample dialogue

2. In groups of 3 students participate in role-play and  switch roles

3. Tasks for waiter/waitress (a) Welcome. (b) Give menus. (c) Tell the guests the special of the day. (d) Give them some time to look at the menu. (e) Take their orders. (f) Confirm their orders. (g) Ask how the meal was and if they want dessert.

Sample Dialogue

Waiter: Welcome. Here are your menus. आपका स्वागत है.  यह हमारा मेनू है.

Customer 1: What is the special today? आज क्या खास है?

Waiter: Today’s special is आज हमारा सब से खास, ताज़ा और अच्छा मसाले वाला झींगा तरीवाली मुर्ग है। गोश्त वाली बिरयानी है। और आपकी जो पसंद हो, हम वह भी बना देंगे।

Waiter: लेकिन आप आराम से देखिये। मैं २ मिनट के बाद फिर आता हूँ।

Waiter:  जी, फरमाइये आप को क्या चाहिए ? क्या आप ऑर्डर के लिये तैयार हैं?

Customer 1: मेरे लिए एक आलू समोसा, पनीर टिक्का और १ नान लाना. ज़रा अच्छी तरह गरम हों।

Waiter: And you? और आप के लिए? 

Customer 2:  मेरे लिए डोसा मसाला लाना. लेकिन इस से पहले ढोकला लूँगा. अच्छा है न, कहीं पिछली बार की तरह बासी न हो ?

Waiter: नहीं, अभी ताज़ा बनाया है, और कुछ? पीने के लिए क्या चाहिए? 

Customer 1: मेरे लिए कोकाकोला।

Waiter: और आप क्या लेंगे? लस्सी मलाई मार कर? नींबू पानी, सोडा लाईम?

Customer 2: बस, पानी ठीक है।  

Waiter: अच्छा, तो आप के लिए आलू समोसा, पनीर टिक्का और १ नान लाऊंगा और आप के लिए ढोकला और डोसा मसाला। एक मेनू मेज़ पर रख दू अगर कुछ और मंगवाना है? 

. . . 

Waiter:  यह रहा आपका खाना। और यह आप का। और कुछ?

Customer 2: नहीं, नहीं…

Waiter: ठीक है।

. . .

Waiter: खाना कैसा लगा?

Customers 2: बढ़िया ! लाजवाब… डकार लेते हुए।

Waiter: कुछ मिठाई लाऊँ? रसमलाई, गुलाबजामुन, रस माधुरी, चममच, फ़लूदे वाली कुल्फ़ी…

Customer 2: नहीं भैया, अब तो पेट में बिल्कुल जगह नहीं  है।

Waiter:  क्या घर के लिये कुछ पैक करा दूँ?

Customer 2: भैया ज़रा जल्दी करना,  साढ़े तीन बज गए, हमें कहीं जाना है।

Waiter: जी जी !
