Course Description and Learning Outcomes

WEEK 1

Topic: Getting to know each other

Language and Function:

  • recognize and write letters of names and places
  • identify basic sentence structure
  • recognize and memorize basic phrases when introducing oneself (Textbook: The Hindi Script and Sound System, Chapter 1)
  • greet each other and taking leave using appropriate cultural way
  • negate and affirm (Chapter 1)
  • ask questions with kyaa and kahaaN (Chapter 1)
  • use sentence structure SOV and the verb hona (Chapter 1)

WEEK 2

Topic: Me and My Home

Language and Function:

  • identify and use conjuncts in names and house objects(Textbook: The Hindi Script and Sound System, Chapter 1)
  • describe my room and my furniture
  • identify what is there and what is not there 
  • ask using and answer questions with kahaaN (where) 
  • use postpositions mein, par, ke paas, se door and demonstrative pronouns, ye, ve, yah, vah (Textbook: Chapter 2 and 3)
  • use adjectives: baRaa, choTaa, gandaa, saaf
  • use of singular/plural, masculine/feminine, use of oblique (Textbook: Chapter 1, 1.3, 1.4)

Topic: Where am I From? Geography

Language and Function:

  • ask and answer questions about where people are from
  • ask for and give personal information
  • name and identify relatives
  • express possession with kinship terms (kaa/ke/kii) (Textbook: Chapter 5, 5.3)
  • ask and answer questions about age
  • use interrogative pronouns (kaun, kiskaa, kiskii, kiske, kahaaN se)(Textbook: Chapter 2, 2.1)
  • use possessive pronouns (Textbook: Chapter 6.4)
  • use past habitual tense
  • use of numbers (1-70)
  • use emphatic hii and bhii (Textbook: Chapter 4)

Topic: Daily Routine

Language and Function:

  • ask and answer questions about daily routines
  • list and identify various daily activities
  • tell time and
  • identify and name days of the week
  • use noun-adjective agreement, feminine and masculine (Textbook: Chapter 1, 1.3, 1.4)
  • use personal pronouns in direct and oblique forms (Textbook: Chapter 1, 1.1)
  • use of present habitual (Textbook: Chapter 6.1)
  • use reflexive pronouns (apnaa, khud) (Textbook: Chapter 6.3)
  • use numbers (1-80)
  • learn about what their peers and their heroes do every day
  • ask and answer questions about roommate routine and their preferences.

Topic: Finding a Roommate

Language and Function:

  • describe a room: the objects and furniture inside
  • name and recognize the colors, size and position of objects inside
  • state which room I prefer
  • name some cultural items in the room
  • politely agree or disagree
  • express possession with countable objects (ke paas) (Textbook: Chapter 8, 8.2)
  • use interrogative pronouns and possessive pronouns
  • use direct and oblique case of nouns and adjectives
  • use of indirect verb X-ko pasand hai

Topic: Roommates, discipline, habits, time.

Learning Outcomes: be able to

  • ask and answer questions about personal preferences, hygiene and discipline 
  • describe about leisure activities, hobbies and habits 
  • make polite requests to do or not to do something (Chapter 5, 5.2)
  • ask and tell time (Textbook: Chapter 12, 12.2)
  • use of subjunctives (Textbook: Chapter 10, 10.1)
  • use infinitives with postpositions (paRhne ke liye, baiThne ke liye, khaanaa banaane ke baad)
  • use compulsory constructions (X-ko infinitive with chaahiye, honaa and paRnaa) (Textbook: Chapter 12, 12.3)
  • use time expressions (saaRhe, pone, savaa…baje )

  • identify and name fruits and vegetables
  • identify and name regional dishes of India
  • recognize and respond to bargaining
  • ask and answe questions about price, quality and quantity
  • identify and list ingredients used in cooking
  • create and follow a simple recipe
  • use numbers (1-90)
  • express needs (Textbook: Chapter 7, 7.3)
  • use indirect verbs with nouns or with infinitives: X+ko … caahiye (need)
  • use of imperatives and subjunctive

  • exchange information about the activities I do with the family and friends.
  • ask about and describe persons, personality and appearance
  • ask about  and express wishes and preferences
  • recognize and use days of the week and the months
  • use direct infinitive with caahnaa (Chapter 13, 13.2)
  • use infinitive with pasand honaa, acchaa lagnaa (Chapter 13, 13.3)
  • use present progressive tense (Chapter 8, 8.1)
  • use more interrogative words: kaise, kyoN, kis prakaar/tarah
  • use comparative and superlative degree of adjectives

Topic: Seasons; Weather; Calendar; Festival

Language and Function:

  • identify and name Hindu and conventional months
  • state what date and year it is by looking at a calendar
  • describe seasons and their main characteristics
  • match clothes with season 
  • describe weather related to geographical location
  • use present habitual tense (Textbook: Chapter 6, 6.1)
  • use adjective and noun agreement (Textbook: Chapter 2, 2.2, 2.4)
  • ask question and answer using what, when and what kind
  • learn about Diwali festival and how it is celebrated in India in different parts of India

Language and Function:

  • identify different places in India
  • identify places on the map to visit and explain why
  • use future tense (Textbook: Chapter 9, 9.1)
  • use conjunct verbs (Textbook: Chapter 7, 7.6)
  • use connectors (is liye, kyonki, fir, etc.) 
  • describe the places in simple sentences
  • use of saknaa, chuknaa, paanaa (Textbook: Chapter 12, 12.3)
  • Use of conditional sentences (Textbook: Chapter 10, 10.4)

Topic: Story Telling

Language and Function:

  • ask about and describe a series of past events
  • use introductory and ending conventional phrases for story-telling
  • use cohesive markers (iske baad, isii liye, uska matlab, etc.)
  • use perfect tense with focus on objects + ko and agreement in masculine singular
