  • describe in some detail and analyze the main events in Gandi’s life
  • narrate past and relevant present events of India’s history
  • state main principles and argue what if…

Language Objectives: Students can:

  • use the ergative to narrate a series of past events with focus on compounds and complex verbs with a noun part: Xने की हत्या की, का सहारा किया की मदद कर दी 
  • use conditional (contrary-to-fact): अगर उनकी ह्त्या नहीं हुई होती, तो क्या होता?

C. Performance Task: 

Interpretive: StuGandhi-youngdents listen to several videos and/or read several excerpts to note down points in preparation for their assigned position in the debate.

Presentational: Students answer to Godse’s last speech from Gandhi’s point of view. They identify 10 points which they argue against or for and elaborate on.

Interpersonal: Debate “Godse’s principles vs. Gandhi’s principles: What seems to be relevant today?”

D. Learning Scenarios:

1. 10 min. Teacher asks students to brainstorm what they know about him — in pairs. gives them 5 minutes to prepare and have them report. Support with vocabulary on the board.

2. 35 min. Teacher plays the video in chunks of about 2 min., each one is played a second time if needed: महात्मा गांधी की जीवन कथा. Teacher has students in pairs answer orally comprehension questions  for each part (handout). Teachers helps with a vocabulary list

3. 20 min. Students receive excerpts from Gandhi’s  biographyTeacher has students create a concept map of Gandhi’s life. In pairs they note main events/details to summarize the segment in the past tense. 

4. Students sit in groups of 3 or 4 and tell each other their segment of the story with focus on using compounds and complex verbs in the past tense. They develop a concept map of his life. They choose pics and make a ppt (printer available in the office) for middle school kids.Gandhi_spinning

5. In pairs students listen to his ideas from an assigned link and take notes (5 points they didn’t know about his principles and 5 points they knew). Then they switch partners share and compare their points in a Venn Diagram: 

6. In pairs students listen to Godse’s last speech and read

7. In groups students prepare to participate in a whole class debate “Godse’s vs. Gandhi’s principles”. They share the points they chose to argue for or against. Teacher assigns each group a position to argue for or against.
