BITS Lab @ NYU and Girlfriends Labs LLC are extremely excited to release Version 2.0 of the staRt app (Speech Therapist’s App for /r/ Treatment). The new version has several added features, including options for increasing practice difficulty and reinforcements for accurate performance. This announcement also serves as a reminder that we are actively recruiting clinical partners to assist with our pilot study formally testing the efficacy of app-based treatment, which is described in the linked master schedule and clinician checklist documents. In order to increase the number of participating clinicians, we are now able to offer a $100 honorarium to offset some of the time you may spend on non-treatment activities like completing background questionnaires and uploading files to our server. If you are interested in learning more about participating as a formal pilot tester, please reach out to us at nyuchildspeech@gmail.com! Feel free to spread the word to any colleagues who might be interested.
staRt app version 2.0 release!
Thanks, and please let us know if you have any feedback!
If you have already downloaded a version of the staRt app, you can access Version 2.0 by logging in to the TestFlight app and following prompts to install the new version. If you have not previously downloaded the staRt app, email nyuchildspeech@gmail.com to get started.
This is very exciting. Is there a way to try out the app without participating in the the study?
Yes, if you email nyuchildspeech@gmail.com, you can download the pilot version of the app for free, whether or not you will be participating as a formal pilot tester.
Hi! I’m a speech pathologist working in an elementary school and would love to try out this app. Such a great idea!
Thanks! Instructions for downloading the app are here, if you haven’t seen them already: https://wp.nyu.edu/byunlab/projects/start/download-start/
I’m supervising a CF who has one very engaged student with a very stubborn /r/ here at the elementary school in Eastern WA. Wondering what kind of visual feedback/biofeedback is part of this app.
Hi Cynthia, sorry for the slow response! The staRt app provides visual-acoustic biofeedback (a real-time display of the acoustic signal of speech). Check out our narrated tutorial video for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NanbZ-AP8TQ&feature=youtu.be
Hello,
I work in a school district and downloaded the app onto my school iPad. I attached a microphone but the app is barely responding in a delayed/slow manner to our voices. Is there a specific version of the iPad that must be used with this app?
Thank you,
Hi Jen, thanks for your inquiry! staRt is supported on iPads running iOS 10 and above. iOS 9 may also work but has not been fully tested. If your iPad is running iOS 10 or higher and the app is still running slowly, you might want to try closing out of other applications that are running at the same time. Hope this helps!
Hi Tara,
Can this app be used in distance learning by mirroring the iPad?
Hi Sarah, we have had a few folks report they were able to use the iPad app remotely, but others find it is too resource-intensive to use along with mirroring or screen-sharing software. We developed a web version of the app that is intended for use in telepractice – it doesn’t have all of the features of the iPad app yet, but we encourage you to try it out and give us your feedback!
