Time: 75 minutes
Objectives: Students can
- Identify and describe events and objects associated with the festival of Eid
- Ask and describe how a fellow student or community member celebrates chaand raat and Eid
- Compare an event they celebrate and Eid
- Sequence events at a celebration
Performance Assessment:
- Students match items related to chaand raat and Eid
- Students report on how their classmates celebrate chand raat and Eid and whether they do things in the same order/sequence or differently
- Students compare chaand raat and Eid with one other festival they celebrate
Learning Scenarios:
1) 5 minutes – Provide students with a handout with vocabulary words and photos related to chaaNd raat and Eid, and instruct them to match the words to the photos.
2) 20 minutes – Explain to the students chaaNd raat and Eid and events associated with them using a PowerPoint presentation. Go over the vocabulary and sequence of the events. Then pair up students and provide them with labeled images of events related to chaaNd raat and Eid to sequence. Once done, call on groups to help you put the event in order using complete sentences.
3) 15 minutes – Have students go around the room to ask three classmates what they do on chaaNd raat and Eid. Then have students share what they learned from one classmate that is different and one that they have in common.
4) 10 minutes – Students watch the NYUrdu video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvjvLVsfdfU and complete a handout matching people with what they do on chand raat.
5) 10 minutes – Students, working in small groups or in pairs, create a Venn diagram to compare the festival of Eid with another festival they celebrate. They save their responses to be used in the posters that will create in the next activity.
5) 10 minutes – In small groups, students create posters about chaaNd raat and Eid to be displayed during their school’s international day.
