Course Requirements and Grading

Week 1-2

Topic: My Favorite Place

Learning Objectives:

  • state what people and places in a chosen location are like with some details
  • exchange information about main attractions and popular activities
  • extend an invitation and accept or reject an invitation to visit a specific place
  • share opinion and preferences about a specific location

Week 3-4

Topic: Story-Telling

Learning Outcomes:

  • narrate childhood stories 
  • identify how they affected their personality
  • rewrite a bed time story for today’s tech savvy child
  • explain at least three benefits of reading a bed time story vs playing a video game

Week 5-6

Topic: Child Labor

Learning Outcomes:

  • identify and describe situations (social and family) leading to child labor
  • suggest strategies how the problem can be solved
  • explain what the main issues in the movie are (society, culture and tradition)
  • contrast and compare plot, characters, themes

Topic: Partition (film)

Learning Outcomes:

  • discuss reasons for the Partition 1947
  • narrate events from the Partition based on film or short story
  • debate pros and cons about the Partition and minority rights

Topic: Partition (3 short stories by Manto)

Learning Outcomes:

  • understand the gist of a short story and narrate the events described in it
  • describe the main issue, the plot and the characters of a story (“ThanDa Gosht”)
  • compare and contrast how two stories approach the partition (“Akhiri Salute” vs. “Toba Tek Singh”)
