The Season of (Sustainable) Giving

With the fall semester coming to an end and the holidays upon us or approaching, the excitement of traditions and celebrations is just around the corner. Part of many people’s holiday season, gift-giving can be a last-minute panic or the big opportunity you’ve been saving for. 

Still, many people wish that the holidays were more meaningful and less materialistic.  Although “reduce” is the most impactful first strategy, it’s particularly hard to do when holidays carry so much sentimental value – Personally, I love to give and receive gifts! 

So here’s some tips and suggestions to make your gift-giving more sustainable without sacrificing the sentiment and excitement.

A More Sustainable Holiday Season

Unfortunately, these activities can generate waste and contribute to our growing carbon footprint. In the United States, household waste increases by 25% between Thanksgiving and New Year’s and 33% more food is thrown away. That’s more than 25 million tons of extra waste

At NYU, we can do our part to change the consumptive-culture around the holidays and reduce our impact.

Our commitment to sustainability is deeply valued by members of the NYU community. Our administrators are committed to incorporating sustainability policies and practices into their office operations; faculty are leading sustainability research and instructing related courses; and students are engaged in peer-to-peer efforts through student government and clubs. Prospective students are also concerned with our sustainability efforts. In fact, according to the Princeton Review’s College Hopes & Worries Survey, seventy-five percent of college-bound individuals and their families said that knowing a college’s commitment to the environment would affect their decision to apply to or attend a school.  Read more

NYU Waste Week 2021

Join us for Waste Week: November 15-19, 2021!

This week will feature waste-related programs from tabling to social media; from a panel discussion to a repair workshop. Do you ever think about waste? What happens to what you dispose? Where does it go? And how can you reduce your own waste amidst a culture of consumerism? This Waste Week, we’ll explore the nuances of waste, with events and activities related to personal waste generation (home composting, anyone?) and waste inequity and politics in NYC.
