Green classes to check out for Fall 2018

Registration for Fall 2018 is right around the corner, and with hundreds of classes offered it sometimes seems like a momentous task to narrow down your schedule to just 16-18 credits. As a double major, I get in the habit of only taking classes in my department, I sometimes forget all the amazing professors. NYU faculty includes such famous academics like author Ta-Nihsi Coates, marine conservationist Ayana Johnson and psychologist Todd Gureckis.

It seems like a waste to not take classes in subjects you might have only a passing interest in. I know people who have switched their majors by taking one class. So whether or not you are studying sustainability and the environment but have always been curious about the topics, I highly suggest the sustainability-focused classes offered in departments you might not expect. So, browse through my curated list of classes found on my second favorite NYU site (after the Sustainablog, of course) NYU Class Search

Archaeology of Climate Change, Professor Radu Iovita
Anthropology Department

I had Radu for Archaeology so I can personally attest he’s a great lecturer and tries to make his classes as much as a shared conversation/debate. I haven’t taken his new course, Archaeology of Climate Change, but I think it should be a really unique way to map how climate has evolved over the past centuries.

Environmental Activism: From the Local to the Global TBA
ES Department

If you’re the type of person to March for Science or sit on the stairs of Kimmel for Divest, this class might be for you. This course aims to answer such questions as why advocacy succeed and fail or what the results of a privileged class of advocates? T

Anthropoc[S]cenes: Performing Climate Chaos, Professor Una Chaudhuri
Honors Seminar CAS

CAS surprisingly has some of the coolest seminars, comparable to Gallatin some might say, and this one is no different. The course evaluates how modern filmmakers, playwrights and visual artists grapple with the realities human-cause climate change has caused. It’s time to get creative when it comes to analyzing climate change, or rather, performing climate chaos.

Think Big: Global Issues and Ecological Solution, Professor Mitchell Joachim
 Gallatin Seminar
Imagine you had carte blanche to solve global climate change? What would you build? Joachim is part of an innovative urban planning firm focused on futuristic and smart design in cities. This Gallatin seminar is offered in Fall 2018, and if you haven’t taken a Gallatin class yet here’s your chance to Think Big!
