Green things to do in NYC for July

Summer in New York City is famous for the sheer number of things going on. From foodie festivals to Fourth of July, it can be a little overwhelming to choose how to spend your free time after an internship or work.

Look no further as I searched Time Out’s and Facebook Daily event listings for July’s most sun-filled and sustainable activities.

NYC Park Foraging Tours

Take a hike with “Wildman” Steve Brill as he takes you on a tour of New York’s most popular parks to explore the art of foraging for edible vegetables, herbs, mushrooms and berries. Enjoy the great outdoors while picking up the week’s groceries.

Central Park- July 2, July 15, August 12
Prospect Park- July 9, July 22, August 13
Forest Park, Kew Gardens, Queens- July 4, July 29

RSVP for your desired date above, suggested $20 donation.

Explore Randall’s Island

Randall’s Island might be best known as the backdrop for Gov Ball or Panorama pics, but in-between festivals, walk across the 103rd Street Footbridge to escape Manhattan’s heat island. With three routes for bikers, runners and slow joggers everyone can get some fresh air without the Central Park crowds.

Explore some of Randall’s finest greenery with its five gardens, restored salt marsh and a 40,000 square foot urban farm.

Free tours: Urban farming exploration day July 1 and July 2. Historical Tour July 6.

Fine & Raw Chocolate Factory Tour

Pretend you’re in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the day as you tour Brooklyn’s own raw chocolate store and “lab.” No need to feel guilty, the chocolate is made in house and the ingredients are bought from sustainable farmers.

Free tour Friday, July 14, sign-up here.

NYC Food Waste Fair

New York City produces 1.32 million tons of food waste per year. The mayor’s office, department of sanitation and various grassroots organizations have as many tons of ideas on how to reduce it. Are you a recycling nerd or just want to learn more? Well then the NYC Food Waste Fair is perfect for the most seasoned composters as well as the curious dumpers.

Tickets until July 1st are $25

City of Water Day

Billed as a celebration of New York and New Jersey’s beautiful waterfront, the Waterfront’s Alliance is hosting its 10th annual party of all things water on Governor’s island. From boat tours to kayaking to paddle-boarding, if you haven’t had the chance to enjoy some aquatic activities now’s the time because everything is free!

Saturday, July 15th.
