“Reclaim”
The premise of reclaim is to spotlight the flaws within the fashion and plastics industry – both of which are some of the most polluting businesses globally. “Reclaim” – similar to my project proposal was to create wearable garments created entirely out of recycled materials and embroidering them to tell a story. The garment should be as wearable and as ‘beautiful’ as I can make it – breaking stereotypes that garments made from trash should look like it was made from trash (lol).
Research
- The research phase was primarily spent on researching Native Chinese plants and designs
- Transforming images to illustrator vectors
- Vectors to artboards on the embroidery software
- Learning via trial and error how to embroider plastics (if it was even viable)
- Viable silhouettes from the recycled materials (is it sewable?)
- How do the materials move with the body?
- Making Patterns/Cutting
- Sewing it all together!
- Fittings~
- Final Product/Edits!

Inspirations
The fashion industry has slowly but surely been incorporating plastic as a textile, but to what degree are we sensationalizing single-use plastics and is it more harmful than using synthetic fabrics? These are the types of questions that I want my audience to ask. I wanted to keep the integrity of my materials as in-tact as possible – making sure to use original straps, clasps, zippers, and etc.
