A profile portrait of a woman with tall natural hair, wearing geometric gold earrings and a colorful halter dress. She is lit with green and purple studio lighting against a dark background. To the right, graffiti-style text reads “Crowned Heights” with a small crown above it. Above, it says “Dr. Shatima Jones Presents…” and below, the exhibition dates “November 6, 2025 – January 21, 2026.” At the bottom, the NYU Gallatin and Gallatin Galleries logos appear.

Shatima Jones’ exhibition at the Gallatin Galleries is a reconstruction of the spaces that have shaped her research, teaching, and identity.  Divided into four areas, the exhibit will pay homage to the streets of Brooklyn where she grew up, the Black beauty salon via her imagined enterprise Shatima’s Shop, her research site The Headmasters Barbershop, and a classroom to commemorate ten years of teaching her signature course (De)Tangling the Business of Black Women’s Hair.
