Shatima Jones’ exhibition at the Gallatin Galleries is a reconstruction of the spaces that have shaped her research, teaching, and identity. Divided into four areas, the exhibit will pay homage to the streets of Brooklyn where she grew up, the Black beauty salon via her imagined enterprise Shatima’s Shop, her research site The Headmasters Barbershop, and a classroom to commemorate ten years of teaching her signature course (De)Tangling the Business of Black Women’s Hair.
The exhibit aims to create social, interactive, and educational spaces about Black cultures for all to experience. The exhibit incorporates historical resources to recount the origins of Crown Heights and how the neighborhood has changed over time. The exhibition also features photographs from the Madam C. J. Walker Family Archives to tell a story about the life, career, impact, and legacy of Madam Walker, a pioneer in the Black beauty industry.
In addition to the exhibit, Dr. Jones will organize a one day conference featuring selected scholars from her syllabus to present their work in the theater adjacent to Gallatin Galleries. Former and current students from her Black Women’s Hair course and Black Experiences in Literature, Movies, and Television class will be invited to the conference and exhibit as a homecoming. The public is also welcome. The conference is on Friday, November 21, 2025.
Crowned Heights, the exhibit and conference celebrates Black communities that reside in Brooklyn, barbershops and beauty salons as historically significant institutions to Black people, and the achievement of teaching a course on Black women’s hair for a decade.
