The blended nature of NYU’s fall 2020 semester—with some of us on campus (both in New York and at the University’s global sites) and others of us remote—means that NYU Zoom will be more important than ever in connecting students and instructors. NYU and Zoom spent much of the spring and summer continually evaluating and improving the service, striving to create the best, most secure experience for the NYU community.
Here are some of the most important things to know about NYU Zoom for the fall 2020 semester, including the Waiting Room feature, NYU Zoom Classrooms on campus in New York, recording and posting a meeting, and using NYU Zoom with NYU Classes.
NYU Zoom Classrooms: Blending Remote and In-Person Learning
Because courses this semester could have instructors and students both in the classroom and remote, NYU has equipped many spaces in New York with integrated Zoom technology. These NYU Zoom Classrooms feature a display screen, camera, and microphone, as well as a touchpad so you can rapidly launch or join a meeting.
Recording and Posting a Class
Instructors can choose to record a Zoom meeting and make it available on demand. If the meeting is scheduled and recorded within NYU Classes, it will be available for students there. If the meeting was recorded outside of NYU Classes, it can be uploaded to NYU Stream for students to access.
NYU Zoom Integration with NYU Classes
NYU Zoom has been a part of NYU Classes for a while, and it will continue to function in much the same way it has before. If you are logged into NYU Classes, then you have been authenticated in NYU Zoom by default and should not be placed into the Waiting Room. For more information on NYU Zoom and Classes, see NYU Classes: Zoom Guide for Instructors.
Instructions for using the Zoom Classroom technology are located in each room. You can also find those instructions, as well as other tips about joining a Zoom meeting while in an NYU Zoom Classroom, here.
Waiting Rooms: Keep Your Meeting Secure
In July 2020, the NYU Zoom Waiting Rooms were implemented as a default setting for all meetings. The Waiting Room feature protects your class from annoyances such as Zoom intruders by enabling hosts and instructors to control who can join a meeting when it starts.
- If someone has authenticated as a member of the NYU community by logging onto NYU Zoom, they will be able to skip the Waiting Room and join the meeting immediately.
- Anyone who has not previously authenticated, or who is not a part of the NYU community (such as guest lecturers), will be placed in the Waiting Room. Hosts can then admit everyone in the Waiting Room at the same time or individually.
- If someone is placed in the Waiting Room after the meeting has begun, the host will receive an alert in NYU Zoom.
