A New Location Brings NYU-NET and NYURoam Wireless to Madrid
By Frankie Veloz and Ken Tai
This spring, one of the University’s first study away locations, NYU Madrid, moved into a newly-renovated building on the Calle del Barquillo, in central Madrid. Renovation included an update of the technical facilities. The new location houses one conference room, two seminar rooms, and 12 classrooms, as well as audio visual and video conferencing functionality in several spaces and a digital studio with stations for video and audio creation, editing, and post-production. The studio also provides faculty with the resources to support technology-enhanced teaching. The new Global Research Institute (GRI) workstations support research-related activities for New York-based faculty and graduate students conducting research in Spain. This area hosts dissertation workshops for doctoral students as well as a workspace for graduate student fellows.
NYU Madrid is also now fully connected to NYU-NET, which means students, staff, and faculty have direct access to NYUHome, NYU Print Service, Fame, Workday, and much more. New IP telephone services provide the ability to dial other NYU locations, including New York, using a five- or seven-digit extension — no country and city area codes required. This new IP telephone service will also enable easier, free, 24/7 access to phone support by the NYU IT Service Desk.
NYU Madrid currently has 38 faculty, 13 on-site staff, and one full-time IT support consultant. The new academic center accommodates more students than the previous building, bringing the anticipated semester enrollment up to 200 from the previous enrollment of 119. Students go to Madrid to study literature, history, art history, sociology, politics, anthropology, economics, environmental studies, and the Spanish language. Spain’s capital city is an important center for contemporary culture, offering students exposure to dance, film, theater, and the visual arts. It is also home to the Prado and the Reina Sofía, two of Europe’s most outstanding art museums.
