From Immersive Concerts to Drawing in Air, the NYU Holodeck Continues to Take Shape
The NYU Holodeck is a cutting-edge shared virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) environment currently in development that will “create an immersive, collaborative, virtual/ physical research environment providing unparalleled tools for research collaborations, intellectual exploration, and creative output.” It is a joint effort between multiple NYU schools and departments, including NYU IT’s High Performance Computing (HPC) and Infrastructure groups. This fall, the project received a multi-million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation and NYU. Recently, a number of applications and events involving Holodeck resources have either occurred or been announced. These include:
- The ‘Holodeck’ Propels NYU to the Future — an overview of the Holodeck project, recent grant and funding news, current developments, and its near-future potential (Washington Square News)
- ChalkTalk — development of a 3D animation application that enables a user to “draw” in mid-air, spearheaded by Ken Perlin and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science’s Future Reality Lab (NYU News)
