God Lite 101

God should drop out of school and get a real job, according to a new book on the history of religious studies in the modern university. Not that the Lord did anything wrong; college just isn’t right for Him. According to D.G. Hart, scholarship is simply better suited to naturalism than to evaluating the claims of the supernatural. “Academic inquiry, if the history of religious studies is any indication, waters religion down to the point where faith makes no actual difference.” The same might be said of journalism, where all too often the religion described and evoked is, as Hart puts it, “thin.” Douglas Sweeney plumps it up in his essay on Hart’s study in Books & Culture.
