Join Gallatin professors Louise Harpman and Rebecca Amato, and Guest Curator Benjamin Goldrich, as we explore Long Island City, Queens, for the 9th annual BIG WALK.
Once a city of its own before the Consolidation of New York in 1898, Long Island City is now one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the nation. Since 2010, more than 15,000 new apartments have been constructed in the gleaming, architecturally innovative towers rising above the neighborhood’s shoreline, and many more are on the way. Long Island City is now home to Silvercup Studios, which has given us so many of our favorite region-focused shows, like The Sopranos and 30 Rock, as well as a host of other big-name companies, including the Jim Henson Company, Society Awards, and Brooks Brothers. But, as a waterfront community, the neighborhood also has a tremendous natural, industrial, and artistic heritage, much of which is still thriving today. Our tour will focus on the western section of Long Island City and will give you a taste of some of the historical, ecological, architectural, artistic, and political narratives that continue to shape the future of this fascinating neighborhood.
The BIG WALK, sponsored by NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and the Urban Democracy Lab, is presented thanks to the incredible labor of Gallatin staff members Theresa Anderson and Michael Wess. The walk is free and open to the public. Reservations are required.
