GREEN GRANT UPDATE: The Carry Your Own! Challenge

Written by Sarah Dietz

The Carry Your Own! (CYO) Challenge officially came to a close on Thursday October 17th, culminating with a celebratory evening awarding the top three plastic waste mitigators for their efforts. (If you are unfamiliar with the CYO challenge, please visit the first blog post to learn more.) Winners were presented with reusable tote bags filled with generous prizes. In the totes were hundreds of dollars’ worth of low-waste lifestyle prizes, including gift cards to Precycle, NYC’s first package free grocery store. These awesome gifts were made possible largely due to donations from local, low-waste lifestyle companies, Precycle and Your Local. The winners were selected based on their level of participation in the three-week challenge, which asked them to eliminate as much personal plastic waste as possible, mainly through two items commonly used by students on campus; coffee mugs and utensils. The contest was judged by an NYU student who chose the winners based on quantity of posts about their challenge experience.

The conference brought together leaders in the public, non-profit, and private sectors to discuss strategies in landfill diversion, as well as the social impact and economic opportunities created by partnerships designed to redistribute resources.

Green Grant Recipient: ITP Energy Workbench

by Jeff Feddersen

I’ve taught an “Energy” course at ITP for several years, and over that time I’ve noticed that there tend to be a few recurring problems when students tackle solar-powered projects. Students typically underestimate the difference between indoor and outdoor light levels; it is inconvenient to take prototypes outside to test, let alone work on them outdoors; they work at odd hours and at the last minute, meaning even with the best intentions and professor deadlines solar projects spend little if any time in direct sun if and when they are working.

AVP Cecil Scheib speaking at public hearing“You can’t just buy high-tech, energy saving equipment, dump it in a building, and expect it to operate correctly. You must also invest in the men and women that will operate it, day in and day out, from now until 2050 and beyond.”

– Cecil Scheib, Assistant Vice President for Sustainability, NYU

Earlier this month, AVP for Sustainability, Cecil Scheib, testified before the New York Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation during a public hearing to examine how best to address the impacts of climate change on communities and the work force.

Presenting “Teardown”, A Hands-on Green Grant

Teardown is a series of workshops that study the deconstruction, maintenance, repair, and repurposing of electronic devices and components. The workshops will combine hands-on deconstruction and repurposing, which will supplement class work and support the development of student work, and discussion around the theory related to waste, capitalism, ecology, new materialism, critical making, and new terms in this realm.
