Celebrating International Compost Awareness Week: The Facts

poster-contest-winner-YessiHappy ICAW to all! This week (May 1-7) is International Compost Awareness Week. The week-long educational event is hosted by the US Composting Council, who since 1999 have promoted biodegradable waste approaches through ICAW events and initiatives. This year’s theme is Compost: The Soil and Water Connection. The theme brings composting back to its roots (pardon the pun) by reminding us that despite amazing new technologies, composting is inevitably about taking some of the most fundamental, natural processes out there and putting them to use in our waste systems once again.

Women’s History Month: Naomi Klein

What she refers to as “a book about climate change for people who don’t read about climate change,” This Changes Everything succeeded in, as promised, significantly changing the way the public eye focused in on climate issues. This February, NYU will be hosting the fourth annual NYUnplugged energy reduction competition! In years past, the Office of Sustainability has carefully tracked the energy consumption from each NYU Residence Hall throughout the month to determine which Hall can best reduce its consumption. The goal of the competition is to both educate and engage the student community around conscious and responsible energy use, and to see those efforts all the way through to actual reductions. Reflecting on Action on Climate featuring Gov. Andrew Cuomo

Okay, okay, it may have been a few chairs over. But regardless, on Friday October 2nd I had the opportunity to speak from the same stage as Governor Andrew Cuomo on the necessity of student action on climate change.

The evening began with an opening speech by Marc Yaggi, Director of the Waterkeeper Alliance and a firm proponent of taking action in the face of mounting environmental challenges. His presentation served as an excellent call to action:
