NYU is a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly University and Business

Bicycle Friendly University -SilverBiking is core to the NYU community. In 2019, we asked our community how they get to, from, and around campus. This survey showed a 627% increase in bike ridership over the last decade! Now, we’ve been awarded Silver-level Bicycle Friendly University and Business status for our efforts to support affordable, sustainable, and healthy transportation.

In the last two years, NYU has nearly doubled bike parking in areas within or adjacent to NYU buildings and facilities. This effort required the collaboration and support of many campus partners, demonstrating the importance of supporting an ever-increasing bike community at NYU. We have also coordinated helmet giveaways, group rides, bike education, and much more.

It helps that New York City is one of the most bikeable cities in the country. All kinds of NYU bikers, from the everyday commuter to the recreational rider can find amenities, resources, and routes to bike on in NYC. NYU has been involved in advocating and partnering with local government, Citi Bike, and community institutions to expand existing programs and increase access to bikes to benefit our campus and surrounding community.

Sustainability at NYU is a team effort. This recognition was due to the contributions of many, including Campus Safety, Government Affairs, the NYU Cycling Club, the Rudin Center for Transportation, C2SMART, the NYU Federal Credit Union and our partners in NYC including the Department of Transportation, Citi Bike, Unlimited Biking, Mechanical Gardens, 511 Rideshare, Bike New York, Transportation Alternatives, and more.
