Whether you’re moving into Rubin or it’s not your first time waiting in Palladium’s line wrapped ’round the block, everyone should think green when it comes to decking out your dorm.
Water filter + water bottle
NYC does have the “champagne of tap water” but if you want an extra filter, make sure to pick up a green brand like Soma made with BPA-free plastic, a sustainable white oak handle and the filter made with 60% plant-based material.
Before heading out to class, make sure to bring your reusable water bottle. The Office of Sustainability gives out bottles from Klean Kanteen (made from eco-friendly materials) but you can also get sustainably sourced bottles from EarthLust, Welly and S’Well.
Energy star mini fridge
College mini fridges are made for two things: leftovers and Red Bull. If you’re going to leave your Friday night slice of Artichoke for a few days too long, make sure it’s energy star. Check out this larger or mini-mini fridge.
Another Office of Sustainability freebie and possibly the most useful item in my bag, bamboo utensils have saved me from useless waste from single-use plastic forks. From Lipton takeout to free food giveaways, these utensils are easily storable and ready to use for every meal.
Fairy lights are a dorm room staple, if you’re in the market for dope decorations check out these solar powered lights that will dazzle any Weinstein concrete wall.
Green cleaning supplies
When you’re living with 1, 2, 3 or 7 other people your room is going to get quite messy. After you make your chores list (and your suitemates promptly ignore it) pick up eco-friendly cleaning supplies from Honest Company, Seventh Generation and Better Life.
