Visas

Visa requirements are program-specific. Students are responsible for obtaining the proper visa documentation needed to travel to their program’s location. Be sure to plan ahead to allow sufficient time for this process.

The NYU Steinhardt Office of Global Affairs cannot advise students on specific visa-related issues. If you require further assistance with the visa process, please reach out to the NYU Office of Global Services (OGS) Outbound Immigration Services, who are a resource for all students planning to study abroad. You can contact the OGS Outbound team by email at outbound.ShortTerm@nyu.edu, by phone at  (212) 998-4720, or via their online contact form with any visa-related questions or concerns.

If you have been admitted to Steinhardt Global Affairs study abroad program and are in the process of changing your name, gender, or any biographical information on your passport, we encourage you to complete that process before applying for a visa. If timing will not allow for this, we recommend that you wait to formalize these changes until you have returned from your time away.

International Students

For participants who are not US citizens, many countries have different visa requirements depending on your nationality. Please consult the destination country’s embassy or consulate and the OGS Outbound team to find out if obtaining a visa is necessary to enter and remain in-country for the length of your program.

Additionally, International students will also need to make sure they have a valid travel signature from their international student advisor at the Office of Global Services so that they can return to the United States after studying abroad.

If a travel support letter verifying your enrollment is required to be submitted along with your visa application, you can request one by emailing steinhardt.global@nyu.edu.

Ghana

The Ghanaian Consulate requires both the traveler’s passport itself and proof of legal status which must be valid for at least 6 months after the program end date in order to be eligible to apply for the Ghanaian visa outside of your country of citizenship. Students in their final year will not be able to attend programs going to Ghana if they do not have the validity requirement on their U.S. visa and passport.

Italy/Czech Republic

Similar to the Ghanaian Consulate, the Italian and Czech consulates require both the traveler’s passport itself and proof of legal status to be valid for at least 3 months after the program end date in order to be eligible to apply for the Schengen visa outside of your country of citizenship. Students in their final year will not be able to attend these programs if they do not have the validity requirement on their U.S. visa and passport.

Transit/Airport Visas

A transit visa is a visa that is valid for a very short period. Depending on your nationality and destination country, you may need to have a transit visa to make a connection in a foreign airport or cross through a foreign country. Some countries have both transit visas and airport transit visa requirements.

All students should consult with their airline and destination country’s embassy to determine if a transit visa will be necessary if they are not flying directly to their program destination. If you have multiple layovers, a transit visa may be required for each stop. If required, it will be the traveler’s responsibility to secure the appropriate transit visa(s).

International Customs

All participants are responsible for keeping themselves informed on the most current customs regulations for traveling to their destination country and returning to the United States. Additional information on traveling to countries around the world can be found on the U.S. Department of State website.
