A valid passport is required for international travel, regardless of citizenship. Certain countries may also require that you obtain a visa or other travel authorization that allows you to enter and remain in that country for a specific time period and reason. Passports must be valid for six months beyond your anticipated return date and should contain at least two completely empty visa pages to accommodate visas and/or entry and exit stamps.
PLEASE NOTE: It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a valid passport and visa(s) to travel internationally for your program. New passports can take up to 14 weeks for processing, so please apply early to avoid complications.
Passport Application/Renewal
US Citizens
The Department of State’s website provides information on applying for a new passport and renewing an expiring passport. The application process can take up to 14 weeks. Students are encouraged to expedite their applications if possible in order to ensure that their travel plans are not disrupted by passport application delays.
First-Time Passport Applicants
If you do not have a passport, you must apply in person at a passport agency, a designated courthouse, or a designated U.S. post office. You can use the US Department of State’s Passport Acceptance Facility Search Page to find a passport acceptance facility near you.
You must have the following documentation to apply for your passport in person:
-
- Completed Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport
- Provide Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (see requirements here)
- Bring a Photocopy of U.S. Citizenship Evidence
- Present ID (see list of requirements for photo identification)
- Bring a Photocopy of ID
- Provide a Passport-Size Photo (see requirements here)
- Payment of Passport Fees
Renewing Passport
If your passport expires within six months of your trip, you will need to renew it before traveling. You can renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82 if your most recent passport meets all five of the below requirements:
-
- Expired/expiring passport is submitted with your application
- Passport is undamaged (other than normal “wear and tear”)
- Was issued when you were at least 16 years old or older
- Was issued within the last 15 years
- Was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order)
NYU Passport Drive
The Office of Global Services (OGS) occasionally hosts Passport Drives, which provides an opportunity to apply for a new US passport on campus. For more information, visit the OGS website.
International Students
Visit your home country embassy website to find out specific requirements and instructions for renewing your passport.
Uploading Your Passport Photocopy
Program participants are required to upload a copy of the signature and biographic page(s) of their passport to the NYU Travel Registry. Multiple passport holders are encouraged to upload all passports they own. Please make sure your passport is signed before you upload it.
If you have been admitted to a Steinhardt Global Affairs study abroad program and are in the process of changing your name, gender, or any biographical information on your passport, we encourage you to complete that process before uploading your passport and/or applying for a visa. If the timing does not allow this, we recommend that you wait to formalize these changes until you have returned from your time abroad. Please contact the Office of Global Services if you have any questions.
Passport Lost or Stolen Abroad?
If your passport is lost or stolen while on an NYU study abroad program, please follow the below steps:
-
- Report the loss to the local police and get a copy of the police report.
- Contact your program leader immediately to notify them of the loss. This is particularly important if you have traveled outside of your program country and might be delayed in returning.
- Contact the Office of Global Services to inform them of the loss so that they can provide additional documentation and information to help you get a new passport and replacement visa (if needed) as soon as possible.
- Contact your country’s local consulate or embassy to get a replacement passport. If you saved a copy of your now lost passport digitally, please print and bring it with you for proof of identification.
