Program expenses can be divided into two categories: Direct costs and Indirect costs. Direct Costs are the fees seen on your Bursar account. Indirect costs are your out-of-pocket expenses, like flights and daily meals.
The direct costs for your program can be found on your program’s page on our website. Within a few weeks of registering for a study abroad course, students can expect their bursar bill for the term (January, Spring, or Summer) in which they are studying abroad to be updated. Payments must be made in accordance with the NYU Bursar Billing Schedule.
The direct costs associated will be billed by the University to each participant’s NYU Bursar account:
-
- Steinhardt Graduate Tuition
- Steinhardt Graduate Registration and Services Fees
- Program Fee
Graduate Tuition, Registration, and Service Fees for study abroad courses are billed at the same cost per point/credit as on-campus courses. All Tuition, Registration, and Services Fees may be labeled as “Overseas Fees” regardless of the program destination.
Program Fees vary based on the program’s itinerary. These fees may be noted as a “Steinhardt Overseas Housing & Activity Fee” line item on your Bursar bill. The Program Fee encompasses a variety of expenses, including entrance and transportation to group activities, program housing, group meals, and your GeoBlue International Health Insurance.
In addition to the above direct program costs, there are a variety of out-of-pocket expenses related to studying abroad. These typically cannot be covered by financial aid and participants are encouraged to budget for them early in the process. Early planning and saving can make a big difference.
Airfare: Program participants book their own travel to coincide with program dates. (Note that participants must only book their travel once they have been instructed to do so by the Office of Global Affairs.) Some airlines may have student discount policies. We recommend comparing tickets on multiple sites to ensure the best fare. Past participants have used the following flight search engines: Google Flights, Kayak, Student Universe, and Vayama for student rates.
Airport Transfers: Students are responsible for arranging their own airport transfer (e.g., taxi, airport shuttle, etc.) between the airport and their accommodations unless otherwise noted in their program itineraries.
Daily Meals and Incidentals: Students should budget for daily expenses such as meals and personal items.
Vaccinations: Some countries require travelers to be vaccinated against certain diseases before entering. Costs of vaccinations can range anywhere from 30 dollars to 300 dollars depending on the requirements and your insurance coverage.
Passport Application Fees: All passport holders must check to make sure that their passport is valid for at least six months after their program end date and, if it is not, they must apply for a new passport as soon as possible. Find more information about passports here.
Visa Application Fees: Each country has different visa requirements, fees, and procedures and these will also vary depending on the traveler’s nationality. Find more information about visas here.
Current NYU Students
Financial aid is available to current NYU students and may apply towards the cost of their study abroad program. Students must have a valid FAFSA on file and meet the term’s credit minimum to qualify for aid.
For January and Spring Break study abroad programs, students qualify for Financial Aid if they are registered for at least 4.5 credits (as a graduate student) or 6 credits (as an undergraduate) or more between J-Term and Spring combined.
For Summer study abroad programs, students qualify for Financial Aid if they are registered for at least 4.5 credits (as a graduate student) or 6 credits (as an undergraduate).
For billing purposes, January courses count towards the January intersession term’s course load and Spring Break courses count toward the spring term’s course load. Summer courses count towards the Summer term’s course load.

Requesting a Refund Advance
Financial aid refunds are typically disbursed ten days prior to the start of the term. Should you require your financial aid refund in advance in order to pay for any pre-departure expenses, you have the option of requesting a refund advance from the Bursar. To request a refund advance, contact the Office of the Bursar by email at bursar.refunds@nyu.edu or phone at 212-998-2818.
Please note:
- If you request a refund advance, please alert the Office of Global Affairs by emailing steinhardt.global@nyu.edu.
- Final payment of all direct costs must be made prior to the program’s start date.
- Loans cannot be released to NYU before your designated disbursement dates and until certain basic enrollment criteria are met and verified. Any refund resulting from your student loan will usually not be confirmed and processed until a few days after your disbursement date.
- The fastest way to receive your refund is to enroll in the direct deposit of student refunds.
Visiting Students
Per federal regulations, visiting students are not eligible for financial aid through NYU. If you are a visiting student, we advise that you explore the following options:
- Contact your home institution’s financial aid office to find out if you are eligible for financial aid through a consortium agreement.
- If consortium agreements are not offered through your home university, you may opt to apply for a loan from a private lender. Private lender loans can be found on the NYU Financial Aid website.
- Visiting students attending a non-US institution are NOT eligible to participate in our study abroad programs.
Visiting Professionals
Per federal regulations, visiting professionals are not eligible for financial aid through NYU. Visiting professionals must legally reside in the United States.
Global Affairs maintains a list of scholarships on our website. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their scholarship applications as soon as possible.
Students who are recipients of Steinhardt Global Programs’ competitive, need-based scholarships will receive the funds in the form of a bursar bill credit. Students who have received other scholarships should contact the administrator of that scholarship to inquire about payment timing and terms of use.
Students who face higher education-related costs due to extenuating circumstances may request a budget increase by submitting a Budget Appeal Form. This appeal form allows the Office of Financial Aid to examine education-related expenses, including the costs of studying abroad, and to evaluate your eligibility for additional loan funding. Contact the Office of Financial Aid at financial.aid@nyu.edu to request a budget appeal form.
