Janet Gu is a senior majoring in Applied Psychology and Global Public Health. She has worked at different labs in the past, and is currently working on her honors thesis with Dr. Sirin. The goal of the study is to establish a new framework for racial teasing and to identify it as a unique construct and its significance in relation to developmental outcomes. Her research interests focus around the impacts of various social contexts on the development and psychological outcome in people of color. After graduation, she would like to go to graduate school to further her education in psychology and get licensure as a mental health counselor.

Freda Hasselbring is a senior double majoring in Applied Psychology and Global Public Health on the pre-medical track at NYU. She has been a part of the Home School Connections research lab (previously L-FELD NYU) since the spring of 2021 and is currrently working on her honors thesis with Dr. Schick. Her research interests include emotional self-regulation skills, creativity & imagination, and empathy among pre and elementary school students. She is also interested in protective factors influencing the school readiness of low-income, multilingual and immigrant youth. Following graduation, she intends to pursue clinical and research opportunities before attending medical school.

Maya Shapiro is a senior in Applied Psychology minoring in Digital Art and Design. She is a volunteer ESL tutor for EConnected; a non-profit helping connect students to tutors remotely. She enjoys story telling, and has illustrated two children’s books for Psychotherapist and LCSW Eugene Roginsky through the publishing company “Magic of Story Press”. Post graduation, Maya wants to combine her love of psychology and design by pursuing a career in digital marketing and branding.

Vion is a senior in the Applied Psychology program with a minor in Business of Entertainment, Media and Technology. She is interested in improving mental health literacy and increasing access to psychological services for marginalized populations, particularly the LGBTQIA+ community. As a current research assistant at Families and Children Experiencing Success (FACES) Lab, she focuses on examining the effectiveness of parent-targeted interventions for children with behavioral challenges (e.g., ADHD) and their families. In addition, she is working as an intake counselor at The Door, where she conducts intake interviews with young people and refers them to appropriate services and programs. While planning to explore more career possibilities, she hopes to dedicate herself to providing mental health care to minority populations in the future.

Sydney Liang is a senior in the Applied Psychology program with a minor in Media, Culture, and Communication. She is currently a research assistant at Play and Language Lab, which examines how children interact with their environment as well as how social and cultural factors influence children’s development. Previously, she has interned at various organizations ranging from nonprofits to multinational companies. She plans on continuing to explore various career paths which highlight the intersection between psychology, research, and communication before pursuing higher education.

Grace Park is a senior in Applied Psychology minoring in Nutrition and Dietetics. She is interested in raising awareness of mental health in minority communities and hopes to help such populations by providing culturally competent care. Grace will be working as a research assistant for The Listening Project which aims to train middle school students and teachers in a semi-structured method of interviewing with the goal of enhancing listening skills, empathy, trust, academic engagement and achievement. The Listening Project works to disrupt stereotypes and build relationships across differences. Grace ultimately hopes to complete her masters at NYU for Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness.

Chloe Carlson is a junior in Applied Psychology with a strong interest in the effects of media on the mind. While pursuing a minor in Media, Culture, and Communication, she hopes to assist in the creation of more psychology related media in order to raise mental health awareness and educate others.

Freya Chen is a senior in the Applied Psychology Department with a secondary major in Economics who is still exploring her passionate field. She worked with local charity organizations that help children in poverty in underdeveloped areas in China and advocate social justices for underrepresented groups. She is interested in mental health for women and other underrepresented groups and hopes to research in related areas.

Adina Schick is a Developmental Psychologist whose work to date has focused on cultural variations in children’s language, literacy, and narrative development, with a particular emphasis on the individual and combined contributions of the home and preschool contexts on these school readiness skills. Her research has probed the role of continuity in home-school book sharing practices in supporting low-income Latino Head Start children’s emergent literacy development and highlights the importance of promoting parents’ use of culturally-relevant practices. As a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at NYU’s Child and Family Policy Center, she worked on the creation of a Common Metric to link the three most commonly used preschool assessment tools, and helped develop and supervise the implementation of a large intervention aimed at professional development of early childhood educators throughout New York City, as well as from across New York State. Dr. Schick’s work has been funded by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, The Brady Educational Foundation, and the Brooke Astor Foundation.
