Financial Aid Resources

Federal Aid

Federal Aid packages are typically the primary source of funding for NYU graduate students.  Federal Aid packages include federal and private loans as well as federal work-study.
To obtain a federal loan, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Even if the deadline for the upcoming semester has passed, you will still be considered for Federal Aid based on the availability of funds.

Federal Direct Loans

Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits per semester to be eligible for consideration. The NYU Office of Financial Aid determines your loan eligibility upon reviewing FAFSA data and your anticipated enrollment. Your loan eligibility will be included in your financial aid package. An overview of Direct Loans for which you may be eligible can be found on the website for the NYU Office of Financial Aid.

The FAFSA

Submit a FAFSA online immediately if you haven’t done so yet (www.fafsa.ed.gov). It will take at least 6-8 weeks to be processed.  Go to www.nyu.edu/financial.aid or call the Financial Aid office at (212) 998-4444 for advice. When completing the FAFSA, be sure to include the NYU school code “002785,” so your information will be sent to us and our Office of Financial Aid can compile a financial aid package for you. The academic year, for the purposes of filing the FAFSA, begins with the summer term. Therefore, if you are considering admission for summer 2010, fall 2010 or spring 2011, you should file the 2010-2011 FAFSA, which is available now. If you are considering admission for summer 2011, fall 2011, or spring 2012, you will file the 2011-2012 FAFSA, which will be available after January 1, 2011.

Requesting Equivalency Status During your Thesis Semester

Most students receiving federal aid request either half- or full-time equivalency status during their thesis semester. This allows the student to be recognized as a half- or full-time student for aid purposes while having a reduced course load. Read here for more details.

CGA Scholarships

Advisory Board Scholarship

In recognition of student achievement and promise, the Advisory Board Scholarship provides partial tuition support to outstanding students with financial need who are working toward the completion of their graduate studies at the Center for Global Affairs. The award is made possible through the exemplary generosity of CGA’s advisory board members, many who have volunteered with the Center to help us grow and further our mission of creating global citizens since our founding over 10 years ago.  Only open to current students who have completed 12 credits or more in the MSGA program.  The call for applications is typically in the Fall semester and awards are made for the Spring term and the award amount is $5,000.

MSGA Research Fund (RF)

The MSGA Research Fund (RF) will consider grant applications across the board, and will make a minimum of $1,000 available each semester in individual awards of generally up to $200. The RF is intended to support travel and other expenses relating to especially novel or significant thesis/capstone research or to support the costs of registration, travel, and accommodation for participation in conferences and similar events (i.e., presenting a paper, acting as a discussant or the like, not simply attending the event). Applications are reviewed by the divisional dean and the academic chair.  Only open to current students who have completed 12 credits or more in the MSGA program.

International Student Scholarship (for incoming students)

The NYU School of Professional Studies announces scholarships in amounts starting from $10,000 annually to be awarded to international students on F-1 visas with an exceptional academic background, who meet the admissions requirements of the graduate program in Global Affairs, and who commit to pursuing the MSGA on a full-time basis for a two-year period leading to the completion of the degree. Scholarship awardees will receive the full amount of their award for each of their two years in the graduate program.

To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must submit the complete application for admission to the M.S. in Global Affairs program by the International Student Early Decision deadline.

*Students may receive awards from multiple funds in the same semester, possibly for the same project, but this would be unusual and only for especially expensive and/or valuable activities.

Employment and Graduate Assistantships

For information about on- or off-campus employment opportunities during your studies, visit the Wasserman Center for Career Development at 133 E 13th St, or online atwww.nyu.edu/careerdevelopment. Many MSGA students pursue part-time internships relevant to their studies, which may include a stipend.

A limited number of part-time graduate assistants are hired each semester within the MSGA department. Graduate Assistants support the academic and research activities of the faculty member, and are paid hourly. Assistants are typically selected by the faculty member based on their academic performance and relevant research interests. Students are encouraged to speak to the department administration if they are interested in these positions.

After Graduation

Several organizations participate in Federal Loan Forgiveness programs. These programs give graduates the opportunity to gain work experience in fields related to their professional interests while removing a portion of their future education debt. Examples of some of these organizations include the Peace Corps, Teach for America, AmeriCorps. Federal agencies also offer student loan repayment programs. Please visit these programs online for more details.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 established a new public service loan forgiveness program. This program discharges any remaining debt after 10 years of full-time employment in public service. The borrower must have made 120 payments as part of the Direct Loan program in order to obtain this benefit. More details are available here.
