Doctoral students:
Scott Brauer is a fourth-year doctoral student in the Developmental Psychology program within the Applied Psychology department at NYU Steinhardt working with Dr. Selcuk Sirin. Scott is interested in the intersections of culture, development, and policy in educational and familial contexts. Specifically, his research interests center around (1) the psychological effects of migration on developing adolescents, (2) the diverse ways in which immigrants-origin youth and adults become engaged in civic and community affairs, and (3) the impact of policy developments on the lives of immigrant youth and families.
Prior to starting at NYU, Scott obtained a B.A. in Human Development and German Studies at Connecticut College. He completed an Honors Thesis with Dr. Sunil Bhatia researching the impacts of educational and community integration programs on adolescents’ diverse psychological adaptations after migrating to Germany. Afterwards, he worked with Dr. Loren Marulis on a meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy of metacognitive interventions on promoting the academic achievement of young children.
Canan Tugberk is a fifth-year Ph.D. student in the Developmental Psychology program at NYU Steinhardt. Her main research interest centers on how parental factors in disadvantaged populations predict school readiness. She is also concerned about migrant populations and refugee mothers’ parenting experiences. For her M.A. Thesis, she wanted to understand better the meaning of dislocation for Syrian refugee youth and the risk and resilience factors that help them cope with difficulties of pre- and post-migration factors.
She holds a master’s degree in Child-Adolescent Clinical Psychology from Bilgi University, Applied Developmental Psychology from Ozyegin University, and a BA degree in Psychological Counseling from Boğaziçi University, İstanbul. She volunteered in several intervention programs that integrated arts while working with Syrian refugee children.
