Doctoral students:

Dr. Elysia Choi currently works as a manager, audience analytics in Beauty Co-Lab. Elysia received both her Ph.D. in Applied Developmental Psychology and her B.A. in Psychology from NYU. Elysia can be contacted via LinkedIn.

Dr. Brian Collins currently works as an associate professor of bilingual education at Hunter College. Brian received a Ph.D. in Multilingual / Multicultural studies at NYU. Dr. Collins’ research focuses on the dual language development of children of immigrants in the U.S. and how language competences interface among dimensions of children’s social, psychological, and academic well-being. Jessica Cressen is currently an assistant manager, instructor, and trainer at Megacycle LLC. She received a M.A. from NYU in Psychology and Social Intervention and her B.A. in Psychology and Spanish from Bucknell University. Her research interests include academic achievement gaps, stereotyping and discrimination, and the demographic predictors of social-emotional and academic outcomes. Dr. Taveeshi Gupta currently works as the director of research, evaluation and learning at Equimundo in addition to working as a social development consultant at UNICEF. Taveeshi received a Ph.D. in the Psychological Development program at NYU. Prior to coming to NYU, she completed her B.A. and M.A. from University of Delhi, India. Dr. Ha Yeon Kim currently works as a senior research scientist at Global TIES for Children at NYU Steinhardt. Ha Yeon completed Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology at NYU Steinhardt. She has a M.A. in Child Development from Seoul National University. Her research interests include the role of English proficiency and classroom interactions in the academic adaptation of immigrant children and adolescents, as well as culturally sensitive school and classroom climates. Tessa McNaboe is a therapeutic group counselor at the West End Day School. She was in the Developmental Psychology program at NYU Steinhardt and received her B.A. from Southern Connecticut State University. Tessa is broadly interested in supporting child development and well-being in the context of stress and crisis and discovering social-emotional strategies that children and parents use to mitigate or buffer stress responses. Dr. Madeeha Mir currently works as an adjunct instructor at NYU Steinhardt for Applied Psychology. She completed a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at NYU. Dr. Patrice Ryce currently works as an adjunct professor at New York University Steinhardt in addition to serving as Focus Program Director, Testing Coordinator and Focus Teacher at the Winston Preparatory School. Dr. Esther J. Sin recently completed a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology in the Applied Psychology department at NYU Steinhardt. Esther worked with Drs. Selcuk Sirin, Niobe Way, and Sumie Okazaki. Broadly she is interested in the intersections of culture, context, and human development. Specifically, Esther uses mixed methods to understand (1) how sociocultural contexts affect developmental trajectories of immigrant youth, (2) how cultural ideologies shape mothers’ gender socialization across ethnic groups, and (3) how gender socialization is related to adolescent socio-emotional development. Prior to starting at NYU, Esther completed a B.S. at Boston University and her M.A. at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she worked with Dr. Suniya Luthar. Master students:

Nadia Barouk is currently a third year medical student at Rowan University. She received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology: Child and Adolescent Concentration from Montclair State University and a B.A. from Rutgers State University. As a research assistant at EPIC, she worked on the Syrian Adolescent project. She is currently working on developing a mental health service project for rural communities in Southern New Jersey. Alexis Carrion is currently a doctoral student at Temple University and a research consultant. Alexis has collaborated with Dr. Diane Hughes, Dr. Niobe Way, and Dr. Selcuk Sirin in their respective research pursuits. Janet Choe is currently an aided primary teacher with specialized movement exercises at Hanmaum Community Rehabilitation Center. She received her Master’s degree in Design and Development of Digital Games at Teachers College (TC) at Columbia University. She attended New York University where she collaborated with Dr. Sirin on the NYCASES project, in addition to having assisted with preliminary coding for identity maps. Clare Clingain is currently a senior research coordinator / researcher, Economic Recovery and Development at the International Rescue Committee. Sammy Ahmed is currently an assistant professor at the University of Rhode Island. Sammy graduated from the Applied Psychology program at NYU and was a research assistant on The Meta-Analysis of the Immigrant Paradox Project (MAP) and NYCASES. Christopher Albino is currently the owner of Comprehensive Mental Health Solutions. Previously, he obtained a M.A. at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Forensic Psychology. Lorraine Leah Bawabeh graduated from NYU’s College of Arts and Sciences with a concentration in Psychology and a minor in Nursing. Lorraine previously worked in collaboration with Dr. Selcuk Sirin’s research team and the National Eating Disorders Association in an effort to explore the intersection between marginalized youth and psychobehavioral maladjustment.

Kristen Lewis currently works as a consultant at Ascendient. She previously completed a Master’s in Public Health (M.P.H.) at Columbia University’s Mailman School and graduated from NYU’s Applied Psychology program. During the time spent at NYU, Kristen worked on the Meta-Analysis of the Immigrant Paradox (MAP) project and conducted data analysis on psychopathic attitudes in Turkey. She also conducted an honors thesis using data from the NYCASES project which examined acculturative stress and risk-taking behaviors in first generation immigrant adolescents. Dr. Vanessa Victoria Volpe is currently an associate professor of psychology at North Carolina State University.
