The Summer Co-Design Institute is back for a second year!

For a second year, NYU’s Educational Communication and Technology program will partner with the Institute of Play to offer a unique educational and professional development experience.

Imagine in-service teachers, pre-service teachers, graduate students of education, and K-12 students, partnering to create and play games for learning. With pizza (…on one day).

Last year‘s participants tell us that the institute continues to inspire their teaching. Here’s a post reflecting on the experience. We’re looking forward to making more memories together!

Description

This course is an introduction to designing non-digital game-like learning experiences for the classroom. You will:

  1. Explore and use game based learning strategies through collaborative design challenges
  2. Create, playtest, and rollout your very own learning game as part of an iterative design process.
  3. Use design thinking as a frame for developing classroom-ready materials.
  4. Gain valuable resources and best practices for bringing game based learning into your classrooms.

Program Learning Goals

Participants will understand that:

  • Core Mechanic and Learning Goal alignment is at the heart of Game Based Learning.
  • The game by itself is not enough. Games are tools for designing highly engaging learning spaces, but the most effective learning games are situated within a larger context.
  • Playtesting and rapid iteration are powerful tools for designing curriculum, game like learning, and learning games.

Participants will be able to:

  • Use the iterative design process to design an original learning game.
  • Situate a learning game into the context of a larger piece of curriculum.

Resources

  • Tools to plan playtests and collect playtester feedback.
  • Tools for planning an effective unit of gamelike curriculum.
  • Access to a set of analog learning games.
