Summer Institute: Co-Designing Game-Based Learning Experiences through Teacher-Designer Partnerships

Main instructors: Camillia Matuk (Educational Communication and Technology, NYU) & Rebecca Rufo-Tepper (Institute of Play)

Description

This summer institute engages participants in collaboratively designing solutions to authentic educational problems. Guided by staff from the Institute of Play and from NYU’s faculty in Educational Communication and Technology, teams of graduate students, pre-service teachers, and in-service teachers will form a community of mentored practice that combines expertise in teaching, educational design, and game-based learning.

Through intensive co-design activities, both face-to-face and online, participants will develop an understanding of, and an ability to apply game-based learning strategies to designs that improve student learning within real-world constraints. The institute will culminate in a weekend children’s workshop, facilitated by institute members, and in which teams will test ideas they develop together.

By the end of the institute, participants will have produced ready-to-use materials, and acquired design thinking strategies for innovating and implementing meaningful learning experiences. Materials generated by co-design teams will be archived in an online community for access beyond the institute. This community will also support institute members who wish to continue their collaborations during future classroom implementation of their co-created materials.

The institute serves as an introduction to using game-like learning to reach a broad set learning standards. It is meant to be flexible for a variety of educators regardless of subject area and age group. It will be of particular interest to students who seek to design with stakeholders for real-world educational settings; and to pre- and in-service teachers who seek unique professional development experiences, and partnerships that result in usable and sustainable educational materials.
