My intervention is an obvious jab at mainstream social conservatism in Islam (glamourized personal piety), especially ones highlighted through Muhajababes, but the jab is self-critical and ironic at the same time. My question throughout the intervention – and throughout the class, really – is that as an Asian non-Muslim male, what position can I take in commenting on Muslim pop culture? What gives me the right to determine what works, what doesn’t work, what is right or wrong?
