As rumors swirl about the possibility of Twitter requiring a $19.99 per month subscription to retain the checkmark, which denotes a verified account, scammers have seized the moment, and have sent out spoofed messages purporting to be from Twitter. These messages offer the possibility of keeping the checkmark for free, in exchange for personal information.
Note, these messages are replete with a sense of urgency:
- “Don’t lose your free verified status”
- “You need to give a short confirmation so that you are not affected by this situation”
- “To receive a verification badge for free and permanently, please confirm that you are a well known person”
- “If you don’t provide verification, you will pay $19.99 every month . . . .”
Another phishing feature is the sender’s reply address, which will diplay as Twittercontactcenter@gmail[.]com, which is a clear red flag, due to the lack of a Twitter domain.
