The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (“CISA”) has issued a warning to remain vigilant for possible scams targeting Hurricane Dorian victims or potential donors. Social engineering attempts commonly follow natural disasters and may occur via emails, phone calls, social media updates, web pop-ups, text messages and in person visits. These scams may direct you to malicious websites designed to steal sensitive information, or hurricane related messages you receive may contain malicious links or attachments. Some scammers may even pretend to be utility workers, government officials or safety inspectors.
It is recommended that you exercise caution with any email containing a hurricane subject line, embedded link or attachment. If you’d like to donate to a charitable organization, please view the following FTC tip sheet: Before Giving to Charity. In terms of in-person visitors, it is recommended that you always ask for id, and do not provide visitors with any sensitive information.
