Please be advised of an email unsubscribe confirmation scam in which “Confirm your unsubscribe request” appears in the subject line. The body of the email will likely contain an unsubscribe button and generic text. The goal of this phishing campaign is to collect working email addresses to use in other attacks.
It is also advisable never to click “Unsubscribe” in a message that has been marked as SPAM or that you’ve determined is SPAM. In addition to confirming that your email address is valid and active, you could potentially trigger the installation of malware.
Recommendations/Reminders:
- Please be reminded not to click embedded links or open attachments in unexpected messages, even when a message appears to come from someone that you know, as email addresses and phone numbers can be spoofed.
- Embedded links may include hyperlinked text, such as “Click here”, a typed URL, or a button.
- Always confirm the legitimacy of unexpected messages by contacting the sender via a trusted means of communication, such as their NYU Directory phone number.
