The recent Capital One data breach has reportedly exposed the personal information of 106 million credit card customers and applicants in the U.S.and Canada. From individual and small business applications filed between 2005 and early 2019, breached information includes, but is not limited to:
- Names
- Dates of Birth
- Addresses
- Phone Numbers
Credit card holder breached information includes:
- Credit scores
- Credit limits
- Balances
- Payment history
- Contact information
- Some transaction data
- Additionally, approximately 140,000 social security numbers, 80,000 linked bank account numbers as well as the Social Insurance Numbers of approximately 1 million Canadians were stolen.
Capital One has reported that no credit card numbers or login credentials were compromised, and has stated that over 99% of social security numbers were not compromised. The FTC has issued an advisory recommending that consumers check their free credit report and take measures to protect themselves from identity theft.
