Where I’m from

A sense of place and a myth of origin are central to who we are and how we define ourselves. In Where I’m from, three graduating seniors explore what that means in very individual and unique ways. For Madeline Cottingham, this is a question of home and a way of life. Through a personal inquiry into lifestyle choices and her upbringing, she introduces the viewer to a concrete version of the idea that ‘another world is possible.” The contrast implicit in growing up on a farm and then coming to the city is filtered through the intimate lense of the observant environmentalist. For Alexander Craig, his origin story is complicated as much by what is known as by what was unknown. The discovery of a lost twin informs his exploration of self, both as holistic and divided. Laura Luempert’s Coloring Book takes a playful approach to location and self as we follow a girl who has fallen into the magical world of two dimensions. Through her unique approach to creating these images, Laura has transformed a sense of place, the everyday, into a magical doorway laden with possibilities of play, engagement and wonder.

As they embark on the exciting transition form Gallatin to the next phase, this show answers the oft repeated question, Where are you from? and also shows the promise of where they are going.
