Artistic Director’s Statement

“From Jacqueline Hall’s “Growth Machine,” a reappropriated soft drink vending machine dispensing seeds in exchange for the buyer’s pledge to disperse them throughout the city to Hannah Daly’s hybrid performance/lecture “The Golden  Hour” interrogating the history of urban space, the work in this year’s festival exemplifies the uniqueness of Gallatin’s interdisciplinary arts program and the innovative and creative work by the students. A vast majority of the projects in the festival engage larger questions about the world we live in by challenging preconceived ideas or offering new and diverse socially engaged perspectives. Cross-school collaboration as well as projects devised from concentrations and colloquia also characterize this year’s work. The evocative intersections of form and content provide inspiring and exciting examples of what makes art at Gallatin special.

The festival also provides an experiential learning opportunity for students interested in curatorial work and production.  Tommy Craven, Rachel Georges, Kristi Berry, Sarah Bartley, Collin Munn, and Nicole Johnson, all members of this year’s student leadership team, have been working since October to create, nurture, and present this eclectic and engaging week of work. Congratulations to the team and participating artists for this year’s festival!”

—Kristin Horton, Artistic Director

Producers’ Statement

Coming into this process, we were aware of the presence and prevalence of artists at Gallatin. We’d seen their work in our classes, on stage at Gallatin or greater NYU, or in the city. We knew that talent surrounded us, and yet when the proposals poured in, it was still a revelation. Gallatin is full of artistic ingenuity bursting at its seams. Reviewing proposal after proposal, we were continually inspired by the risk-taking of  Gallatin artists and the bold declarations of defiance against easy definitions that blur the all-too-familiar lines separating mediums from one another. As Performing Arts Producers, we have had the opportunity to work closely with this year’s artists to bring life to the work you will see over the course of this week. We are thrilled to be a part of this festival and proud to present this fantastic group of artists.”

Curators’ Statement

“Welcome to the 2012 Gallatin Arts Festival. As curators of the visual arts component of the festival, our goal has been to curate a festival that shows a wide variety of talent. We knew it would be a challenge to select only a few works to show. Although many students applied, we additionally sought out artists in Gallatin who’s talent has been overlooked. Our overall applicant pool was competitive and featured a wide array of mediums, styles and proposal ideas. It was an exciting and equally di!cult process to narrow down our choices, but we are pleased with the caliber of the artists we have chosen to work with. We are looking forward to sharing with you the amazing work these Gallatin artists have produced.”

—Rae Georges (’13), Colin Munn (’12), Curators

About the Gallatin Arts Festival:

MISSION

The Gallatin Arts Festival is a week-long, community-wide celebration of the unique artistry and interdisciplinary scholarship of students at NYU’s Gallatin School. The festival features student work in the visual and performing arts and serves as a galvanizing force and springboard for action and discussion through the creation and presentation of artistic work.

HISTORY

The Gallatin Arts Festival originated in 1992 as a collaborative effort between Professor Laurin Raiken and graduate student Barry Spanier. Under Professor Raiken’s guidance, Spanier developed the festival as part of his master’s thesis. Since then GAF has expanded into the largest public event sponsored by the Gallatin School. GAF provides hands-on opportunities for students to gain knowledge of the process required to produce a multidisciplinary arts festival. Under guidance from members of the arts faculty and student affairs, the Student Leadership Team serves as the primary support for the festival. GAF is a learning experience emphasizing the development of ideas and collaborative innovation.
